A hiking trail should provide a varied landscape experience. The mill route literally follows this premise. As the name suggests, mills - or more precisely water mills - are at the center of the action. The rivers Lieser and Salm accompany the hiker on the narrow paths - sometimes far below, sometimes directly next to the natural path. While walking through the narrow and densely vegetated valleys, you can feel a bit removed from civilization and let nature have an unrestricted effect on you. And at the end of the first day's stage, a place of historical significance awaits: the Himmerod Monastery. Founded in 1134, the Cistercian abbey is still home to thirteen monks and maintains various facilities, such as a museum, art and bookstore, restaurant, and guest and retreat house. Through magnificent vineyards, with panoramic views of Wittlich and the surrounding mountain ranges, the path leads back to the starting point of the hike. As a crowning finale, the center of Wittlich awaits with further cultural gems, e.g. the historic marketplace, the old town hall, St. Mark's Church and the synagogue.
