The Nitteler Fels Nature Reserve is located between Nittel and Wellen. Towering dolomite and limestone rocks create an impressive panorama and provide a habitat for endangered plants and animals, particularly for birds, insects, reptiles, bats and orchid species.
Above the pronounced bend of the Moselle River, the impressive rock shapes the landscape. The dolomite and limestone cliffs, formed about 240 million years ago, rise more than 20 meters high and extend over a length of approximately one kilometer. The vineyards below are climatically favored, as can be wonderfully observed in the fauna and flora. Mediterranean plant species such as orchids, rock pear, spurge, snowball, and boxwood thrive here. The rock walls are hunting habitats for many bat species. Reptiles such as the wall lizard and the grass snake also find shelter here. Additionally, there are nearly 100 butterfly species. The rock garden at “Lehlinger” attracts numerous insects with its floral diversity.
Tip: Round hike through the rock path starting from Nittel train station, fully signposted with N3. Length: 6 km, elevation difference: 180 m
Note: With the initiative “Living Moselle Vineyards,” the Rural Development Centre Moselle promotes biodiversity in the vineyards of the Moselle growing region. Awarded so-called luminous points. The Nitteler Rock has been awarded under the motto “Record worthy.” Another award was given at the Saar for the Wawerner Jesuitenberg in Wawern under the motto Rock-Rich.
Tip: Excursion to the Rochus Chapel. High above Nittel, surrounded by vineyards, stands the medieval pilgrimage church of St. Rochus. From here, there is a splendid view of the Moselle Valley and Luxembourg. A pathway with stations leads from Nittel to the chapel.
