Osburger "Kapellchen"

  • Kasel

Chapel with Virgin Mary portrait

The present chapel was built in 1969 under local mayor Paul Mergens and Pastor Peter Jaeckel, as the previous chapel had become dilapidated. The chapel was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1884, when the then pastor Kiesgen requested permission from the Bishop's General Vicariate to transfer the old Stations of the Cross from the parish church to the chapel. Previously, "a young lady from Dagstuhl" had painted a new Stations of the Cross for the Osburg church and donated it to the parish community. In fact, it is likely that a chapel or a wayside shrine had already stood at this location much earlier. According to tradition, it was previously referred to as the "Bonerather Bildchen," because the site was on the way to Bonerath. The reason for the establishment of a chapel or a wayside shrine "Kapellchen" at this location is not documented. Whether it was due to a vow after a fortunate incident with a horse-drawn carriage, or whether it was a "private church" for a settlement "at Timmelterberg," can no longer be determined with certainty today.
