Pfarrkirche "St. Kastor"

  • Macken

According to the chronicle, the parish church "St. Kastor" in Macken was built in 1564; the church was very disfigured by additions in 1719 and 1742. The tower is described as Romanesque. The parish of Macken was suppressed in 1809 and became part of the parish of Dommershausen; thus Macken temporarily belonged to the diocese of Aachen. Already in 1834 the parish of Macken was re-established. In 1848, under pastor Peter Thielen, the rectory was built in front of the church in the center of the village; the inscriptions in the basalt walls above both entrances still bear witness to this today. In the years 1925 -26 the old parish barn was rebuilt as a youth home with a built-in stage. The parish church "St. Kastor" got its present appearance by the new church construction in the years 1927 - 1928 under parish priest Josef Bechtel. During this time of the new church construction the rebuilt youth home served as an emergency church. The youth home was demolished in 1968 because of its poor condition - partly due to the effects of the war.
