  • Traben-Trarbach

Enter the twilight zone in a labyrinth of historical underground vaults, some over 100 m long and a few extending over several storeys.

Around 1900, the town of Traben-Trarbach was known as one of the most important wine trading towns. It is remarkable that the Art Nouveau town on the Moselle was the second largest wine trading center in Europe at the time, right after the great French city of Bordeaux.

The reason for this exceptional position was the great demand for Riesling wines and exports, particularly to Great Britain and overseas. This led to the establishment of over 100 wine companies. For this reason, the capacity of Traben-Trarbach's wine cellars was increased in the second half of the 19th century and large areas of the town center were covered with vaulted cellars like in no other Moselle municipality.

On this "special kind of guided tour of the town", you will learn a lot about the wine and wine cellar industry. As part of a guided tour of the "Traben-Trarbach Underworld", which is offered all year round, you will have the opportunity to visit various separate historic cellars.
