  • Wittlich

Remains of what was once one of the most imposing mansions in the region and a memorial to impermanence. How magnificent it must once have looked!

First a victim of the barbarians, then partly washed away by the river, finally it had to make way for modern transport infrastructure. But none of this could diminish its importance: Wittlich Roman villa was one of the largest and most magnificent country estates far and wide. Imposingly situated on the banks of the Lieser, it was 140 m wide and probably up to 25 m high. The building had three sections connected by galleries. The impressive central building contained luxurious living quarters, two halls and several utility rooms, including a kitchen. Did the owners receive their guests here? Where the bridge pier now stands, there was a wing of buildings with storage rooms and stables for some 12 animals, above it similarly luxurious living rooms with murals and marble. On the other side was an extensive wellness wing, which unfortunately was partly washed away by the Lieser, so that we no longer know exactly what it looked like. On the other side of the river were outbuildings and a well. Were there extensive fields and pastures adjoining them?
