“Old Church” St. Aldegund

The Romanesque “Old Church” of St. Aldegund, first mentioned in documents in 1144, stands on the site of a former Celtic place of worship above the old village centre. Around 1350 the church received a Gothic vault instead of the Romanesque flat ceiling. The large-scale frescoes that were uncovered during the restoration in 1965 also date from this period. In 1763 the church was baroque: the church was given a wooden-toned vault, Baroque-style windows were broken, a choral tower in the form of a lantern was erected and a Baroque Mary’s altar and a Baroque side altar were erected. Pieces of earlier eras are the wrought-iron pulpit from 1663, the sculpture group “Christus in der Rast” (also Ecce homo) from 1522 and as the most valuable work of art the Renaissance epitaph by Hans Ruprecht Hoffmann. ( 1601) After changing times, the church was again consecrated as a house of God in 1971.
