Saar Bridge

  • Konz
As early as Roman times, a bridge spanned the Saar at today's location. An important long-distance road ran over it, leading from the Mediterranean via Metz to Trier. Ausonius mentioned it in 371 in his Mosella with six pillars and two towers in the middle. The place became famous through the battle at Konzer Bridge under General Grana against the French on 11 August 1675, in which King Louis XIV and Emperor Leopold faced each other. The present bridge was inaugurated in 1948.
