The name Simeonstiftplatz actually comes from the abbey that was built in the 11th century in honor of Saint Simeon next to the Porta Nigra. As an enclosed hermit, he naturally wasn't one for celebrations and festivities. Today, that is different: Since 2018, the statue of Karl Marx stands at the edge of Simeonstiftplatz, who was a well-known friend of jovial and merry gatherings. And even during some colorful market activities, Simeonstiftplatz today provides the perfect backdrop.
