3 buildings in Kassel

In wine lies not only truth but also wealth. This was known to the monasteries and convents of Trier as early as the Middle Ages, which secured the coveted vineyards around Kasel. Today, the Kaseler courts still remind us of the former ownership structures.

In Kasel, the monasteries and convents of Trier have owned vineyards since the early Middle Ages; a sign that these vineyard sites were already desirable back then. Today, three buildings still commemorate these former ownership structures.

Right at the beginning of the village of Kasel, at the narrow point of Ruwertalstraße, lies the former estate of the Trier Stift St. Paulin - now the Hotel Restaurant "Pauliner Hof". This estate is already mentioned as Paulin possession in 1373. It had 33,233 vines, most of which were leased to local residents. The estate house with its high hipped roof dates back to the 18th century. Even today, one can see the Christ sign between Alpha and Omega above the front door. The former chapel has been converted into a residence.

Opposite the Pauliner Hof lies - completely surrounded by walls - the former estate of the Trier Benedictine Abbey of St. Maria ad Martyres, known in Kasel as the Marienkloster. The estate consisted of a residential building and a press house with a courtyard. Today, these buildings are only used for residential purposes after several renovations.

The Monastery of St. Irminen-Oeren Trier also owned an estate in Kasel. It is mentioned in 1227, but possessions of this monastery in Kasel are already documented in 937. St. Irminen was the oldest owner in Kasel, thus possessing the right of lordship exercised by the Abbess of St. Irminen. The vineyard ownership of St. Irminen, consisting of over 100,000 vines, was likely mostly leased out. Since 1854, the former estate of St. Irminen has been owned by the Imperial Counts von Kesselstatt.
