Oldest wine cellar in Germany
The oldest wine cellar in Germany is a place full of history and stories. By no means it is a dusty museum, yet a place for adventurers, full of life and enjoyment for those who like to discover sites.
Built around 330 AD in the heyday of the Roman imperial city of Trier, Germany's oldest wine cellar served as a magazine and storehouse for the Roman citizens. In the 7th century, this place of bustling activity eventually became a place of spiritual retreat. The first cloister of the monastery of St. Irminien-Oeren was created by adding a monumental groin vault, which has been preserved unchanged next to the Roman walls. This vault is still used today as a wine cellar.
During guided tours you will get a small insight into the eventful history of the oldest wine cellar in Germany and you can taste two of the cellar's own wines. By appointment, groups can also get to know the whole range of high-quality wines and sparkling wines during tastings.
