Nestled between the natural landscapes of the Eifel and Hunsrück, the picturesque Ruwertal winds south of the Moselle into the depths of the Hochwald and the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park. The perfect place to breathe deeply. A blessed patch of earth, favored by nature and ideal for enjoying pristine nature, taking deep breaths, and recharging away from the hectic everyday life.
Time Out in Ruwertal and Hochwald
Whether it's by the romantic streams on both sides of the Ruwer, in the enchanted floodplain landscapes, the cool forests of Hochwald, at its airy heights with breathtaking views, or in a unique wine region. Beautiful, well-developed paths wind through the entire landscape for extensive hikes and excursions to the beauties of nature. On the sun-kissed slopes of the vineyards, world-famous wines have been cultivated since Roman times. Just a stone's throw away are Trier, the oldest city in Germany, with a rich Roman heritage, and the German-French-Luxembourg border triangle, the heart of modern Europe.
Winemaking in Ruwertal
Those who follow the narrow Ruwer from its source down into the Ruwertal can hardly believe what this small watercourse has created over millennia. A unique valley with sun-drenched steep slopes where wine has been grown for over 2,000 years.
In the Ruwer, primarily Riesling grows, which finds the best conditions on the mineral-rich soil of the narrow river valley. The steep slopes capture the sun's energy, which the dark Devonian slate excellently stores during the day and releases to the vines at night. Deep down in the weathered soil, the long roots of the vines gather minerals that are crucial for the wines' flavor finesse.
In the wineries along the Ruwer, winemaking has often been home to many generations, and the often difficult-to-access steep slopes are lovingly and laboriously tended. Therefore, it is no wonder that there is such an extraordinarily high density of world-renowned wineries in this small valley.
