Ürziger sundial

  • Ürzig

At the Moselle River, directly at the southern edge of Ürzig, the Ürziger Sundial is prominently situated on a steep riverbank above the Moselle. It is one of the oldest sundials in the region and is considered a technical and cultural historical highlight in the Moselle Valley.

Presumably built in the 19th century, the sundial with its Roman dial still shows the true local time of Ürzig today – and thus is about 32 minutes behind Central European Time. Its design with a flat dial and gnomon is classically vertical and precisely aligned to the south. The location was deliberately chosen: the remains of a medieval watchtower provide ideal conditions due to their prominent position and south-facing facade.

A special feature: In the center of the clock, there is a figure of Kuno I of Pfullingen set into a niche. Below the sundial are traces of historical living spaces carved into the rock – small, hewn from stone, and stacked on top of each other. Another niche houses the damaged wooden figure of a Madonna with child.

The sundial symbolically represents the historical viticulture and the cultural depth of the Moselle Valley. Until the Wine Law Reform in 1971, "Ürziger Sonnenuhr" was a recognized vineyard designation. Today, it is part of the highlight "Erdener Prälat / Treppchen & Ürziger Sonnenuhr" as part of the initiative Highlights of Biological Diversity in the Mosel wine-growing region.
