The Wehrer Rosenberg has been a highlight of biodiversity since 2020. Enjoy the stunning view over the Moselle.
Managed terraces in viticulture are rare along the Upper Mosel. One of the few locations with terraced farming on the German side of the Moselle is the Rosenberg site in Wehr. In its heyday, about 100 years ago, wines from this site fetched top prices and enjoyed worldwide fame. Even today, the wines from the Wehrer Rosenberg are unique, as they possess a distinctive character with a hint of rose fragrance. But not only the wine itself is a celebrity; the vineyard is also renowned. The vines grow on numerous terraces that are often only accessible on foot and are tended by hand. Rocks and dry stone walls alternate with each other. Originally, these were small plots ranging in size from 89 to 120 square meters, which are now in the hands of the Carlsfelsen winery from Palzem. The Wehrer Rosenberg exhibits a special wealth of characteristic habitats, animal and plant species, and was designated as a spotlight for biodiversity in 2020. Peach vines, red-fruited brambles, white stonecrops, and vineyard grape hyacinths grow in the vineyard. Numerous insects can be found, such as the verbascum moth, the spurge moth, or the musk beetle. One can observe wall lizards hunting between the rocks and along the dry stone walls.
A small climbing path leads over the steep limestone cliffs and narrow vineyard terraces of the Wehrer Rosenberg. One quickly gains altitude and can enjoy views into the Moselle Valley and the neighboring Luxembourg. The highlight is reached at the highest point, where an observation pavilion invites visitors to rest and picnic.
Tip: The Wehrer Rosenberg is part of the premium hiking trail Moselsteig-Side Trip "Wehrer Rosenberg." The hike is just under five km long and runs alongside the vineyard through diverse landscapes and the Helterbach Valley with its rustic gorge forest. Moss-covered trees, vines, and the gurgling brook create a unique jungle atmosphere.
