Viewpoint Pavilion Wehrer Rosenberg

  • Palzem

The Wehrer Rosenberg has been a highlight of biodiversity since 2020. Enjoy the stunning view over the Moselle.

Farmed terraces in viticulture are rare along the Upper Moselle. One of the few locations with terraced farming on the German Moselle side is the Rosenberg site in Wehr. In its heyday over 100 years ago, wines from this site fetched top prices and enjoyed a world-renowned reputation. Even today, the wines from the Wehr Rosenberg are unique, possessing a distinctive character with a hint of rose scent. But not only the wine itself, the vineyard is a celebrity as well. The vines grow on numerous terraces, which are often only accessible on foot and are tended by hand. Rock and dry stone walls alternate. Originally, these were small plots ranging in size from 89 to 120 square meters, which are now managed by the Carlsfelsen winery from Palzem. The Wehr Rosenberg boasts a special wealth of characteristic habitats, animal, and plant species, and was awarded the title of a focal point of biodiversity in 2020. The vineyard is home to vineyard peaches, red-fruited hedge bindweed, white stonecrop, and vineyard grape hyacinths. Numerous insects are active, such as the mullein moth, the spurge twig moth, or the musk beetle. Between the rocks and along the dry stone walls, one can observe wall lizards hunting.

Along the steep limestone cliffs and the narrow vineyard terraces of the Wehr Rosenberg, a small climbing route leads. You quickly gain altitude and can enjoy the views of the Moselle valley and the neighboring Luxembourg. At the highest point, you reach an observation pavilion that invites you to rest and picnic.

Tip:

The Wehr Rosenberg is part of the premium hiking trail Moselsteig side trip "Wehrer Rosenberg". The hike is just under five kilometers long and runs alongside the vineyard through diverse landscapes and the Helterbach valley with its rustic gorge forest. Moss-covered trees, vines, and the bubbling brook create a unique jungle atmosphere.
