in Sommerau

Located southeast of Trier, the small village of Sommerau has only 76 inhabitants and is situated in a secluded basin of the Ruwer River. A waterfall characterizes the heart of this village, which is easily accessible by bicycle, and together with the Sommerau castle ruins from the 13th century, it forms a landmark of the town center.

Until 800 years ago, the Ruwer still meandered around the castle hill. Then, the builders from the knightly family "Von der Brücke" broke through the rocky tongue at the neck of the loop during the construction of the castle. What remained was a conical rock on which the structure, first documented in 1303, was built.

This landscape alteration resulted in a new, deepened streambed with the waterfall in the historic town center.

However, tranquility in the little village was not the motivation of the builders: Rather, the waterfall in Sommerau is a product for harnessing water power. For centuries, Sommerau has been a place of millers. From this multi-generational tradition of milling, a modern-equipped grinding mill has been preserved up to the present day.
