- Wawern
The Wawerner Bruch wetland is located in a former valley of the Saar. Rivers, and in particular the bends of a river, the so-called meanders, are constantly changing. Material is deposited on the inside of the bends. On the outer sides, the current hits the bank and carries it away. In this way, the bends become narrower and narrower until the beginning and end of the bend finally meet. A breakthrough occurs and the loop is finally cut off. They become silted up and the so-called ‘circling valleys’ form.

Even though the valleys have dried out, they often contain moist soils. Water continues to collect from the surrounding slopes. A wetland can form on impermeable ground, such as the Wawerner Bruch here. From there, there is a beautiful view of the Wiltinger Saarbogen.
