Apples and slate have always played an important role in Riveris. To bring this cultural heritage to life, a circular hiking trail around the village of Riveris was created in 2022.
The 7.6-kilometer circular hiking trail features various stops dedicated to the themes of “Äppelkist & Schiefer,” which have a long tradition in the village of Riveris.
In 2022, thanks to the dedicated volunteer efforts of Riveris residents and funding from the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park using state funds, this trail was created with highlights such as an interactive slate tunnel, an XXL selfie frame, a 360-degree rotating sensory bench, and much more. The trail is marked in both directions and can be shortened by taking a route through the village. The shortcut is signposted at two points along the trail.
The hike can be combined with the Dam Loop Trail starting from the hiking parking lot; the total distance is then approximately 14.5 km.
General information
Directions
The trail is marked in both directions. If you first head toward the village, coming from the hiking parking lot, you’ll pass the “Schlangenpeedschie”—a fairly narrow but scenically beautiful stretch along the Riveris—and continue hiking along the orchard meadows toward the village.
Here you’ll also find an information board about orchard meadows and have the option to take a detour into the village or use the marked shortcut through the village.
The trail continues through the forest until, after about 1.5 km, it passes through the village and, after 2.2 km, reaches the Bergwerk information point. Here you’ll find interesting information on the topic of “Riveris and Slate.” A few meters further on is the Karlstollen, which was restored as part of the creation of the circular hiking trail.
At kilometer 2.8, the trail turns right across the Riveris toward the Bausbach Valley and then leads steadily uphill to the Panoramablick viewpoint. From here, you have a wonderful view of the village of Riveris and will find a lovely rest area where you can linger and have a picnic.
The trail continues mostly along shaded forest paths toward Burgkopf. At kilometer 5.2, there is another opportunity at a junction to take a shortcut back toward the village.
Continuing through the forest, you’ll find two more information points on the topics of “Forest” and “Forest in Danger” before the trail heads downhill again toward the footbath near the Riveris. Here, after your hike, you can relax and cool your feet in the footbath or in the Riveris. From here, a small bridge takes you directly back to the starting point at the hiking parking lot.
Safety Guidelines
As a general rule, entering the forest and walking on the trails is at your own risk.
Depending on the season and weather conditions, some sections of the trails require extra sure-footedness. Therefore, please wear clothing appropriate for the season and weather, as well as hiking boots with adequate tread.
Equipment
Sturdy footwear, comfortable clothing suitable for the weather, and a snack are recommended.
Tip
The swivel sensory bench at the Panoramablick rest area invites you to take a deep breath and relax!
