Apples and slate have always played an important role in Riveris. To make this cultural heritage tangible, a circular hiking route around the village of Riveris was established in 2022.
The 7.6 km circular hiking route is dedicated at various stations to the themes "Äppelkist & Slate," which have a long tradition in the local community of Riveris.
In 2022, thanks to the volunteer efforts of Riveris citizens and funding from the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park using state funds, this hiking route was created with highlights such as an experienceable slate tunnel, an XXL selfie frame, a 360-degree rotating sensory bench, and much more. The path is marked in both directions and can be shortened through the village. The shortcut is signposted at two points along the route.
The hike can be combined with the reservoir circular route starting from the hiking car park, then the distance is about 14.5 km.
General information
Directions
The path is signposted in both directions. If you leave the path first towards the village, coming from the hiking car park, you pass the "Schlangenpeedschie" - a rather narrow but scenic section along the Riveris - and continue hiking along the orchards towards the village.
Here, you also come across the information board about orchards and have the opportunity to take a detour into the village or use the designated shortcut through the village.
The path continues through the forest until, after about 1.5 km, it runs through the village area and after 2.2 km you reach the mining information point. Here you find interesting information on "Riveris and the slate." A few meters further is the Karlstollen, which was made accessible again as part of the creation of the circular hiking route.
At kilometer 2.8, the path turns right over the Riveris towards the Bausbach valley and then steadily climbs to the Panoramablick station. From here, you have a wonderful view of the local community of Riveris and find a beautiful rest area to linger and picnic.
The path then mostly leads over shady forest trails towards Burgkopf. At kilometer 5.2, there is again an option at a junction to shorten the path towards the village.
Further through the forest, there are two more information points on the themes "Forest" and "Forest in danger" until the path descends again towards the wading pool near the Riveris. Here, after the hike, you can relax and cool your feet in the wading pool or in the Riveris. Over a small bridge, you then reach the starting point again at the hiking car park.
