This area centers around the Riveris Dam, the drinking water reservoir for the city of Trier and the Ruwer municipal association. The beautiful views along the water are what make this route so special.
The drinking water reservoir, built in the Riveris Valley, has been supplying the city of Trier with water from the Hochwald since 1958. The 50-meter-high dam is impressive, and the reservoir has a maximum capacity of 5 million cubic meters.
The 7.9-kilometer-long loop trail is extremely popular with hikers, cyclists, and joggers. On well-maintained paths, visitors can enjoy beautiful views across the reservoir to the forested slopes of the Hochwald. The information boards provided by Stadtwerke Trier offer interesting facts about the dam and topics related to the region’s drinking water supply.
From the parking lot, the trail leads past the water treading pool and a small barefoot trail. The area invites you to linger, and here you can even cool your feet in the Riveris.
General information
Directions
No matter which direction you choose to walk around the lake, the trail always starts with an uphill climb! But the effort is worth it, because after a short, fairly steep ascent, you’ll reach the impressive dam and understand why the climb is necessary.
If you decide to start on the eastern side, the ascent follows the paved section up to the dam. From there, the trail continues along the reservoir without any major inclines until you reach the confluence with the Thielenbach. The route continues along the larger arm of the reservoir to where the Riveris flows in, and then back toward the dam. Just before you’ve circled the reservoir once, take a break on the beautiful, large bench overlooking the lake and enjoy the view of where the two arms meet.

As a general rule, entering the forest and walking on the trails is at your own risk.
Depending on the season and weather conditions, some sections of the trails require extra sure-footedness. Therefore, please wear clothing appropriate for the season and weather, as well as hiking boots with adequate tread.
You are in the drinking water protection area of the Riveris Dam. Please observe the relevant guidelines.

Sturdy shoes, plenty of food.
Tip
Take a break on the large bench overlooking the lake just before you reach the dam again, and enjoy the panoramic view! Be sure to plan a rest stop here!

From Riveris, head through the town toward the Riveris Dam until you reach the parking lot below the dam on the right.

Take Line 30 from Trier to Riveris. From the town, the dam is about 2 km away.
