Hike through the Mattheiser Wald nature reserve, established in 2003. Remnants of shooting ranges and tank roads from decades of use as a training ground for the German Wehrmacht and later the French army can still be found here today. But no worries: the natural environment is now much closer to the area than the military ever was. The forest area spans almost 450 hectares, making it the largest nature reserve in the city. With some luck, you might spot a stag beetle, a bat, or a yellow-bellied toad during your hikes. Even without these shy inhabitants, the forest with its old-growth trees is well worth a hike. There are two well-marked circular hiking trails in the Mattheiser Wald, which can also be combined. Hiking Trail I: approx. 8 km Hiking Trail II: approx. 9 km Combination Trail: approx. 13 km
The tour starts at Hofgut Mariahof. Here you will find a large information board showing the hiking trails I, II, and the combination trail.
The entire route is signposted and runs almost flatly through the picturesque nature reserve of the Mattheiser Wald. If you move quietly here, you might be lucky enough to see some of the rare animals that have made their home here. In addition to kingfishers, crested newts, and stag beetles, there are amphibians in the wet biotopes and wildcats hidden in the underbrush.
Towards the end of the tour, you will be rewarded with a magnificent panoramic view over the hill districts of Irsch and Petrisberg. From here, Hofgut Mariahof will soon be visible again.
