In the past, when "Thiergarten" was still officially spelled with an "h", it was only a suspicion - today, with one letter less, the matter is clear: two- and four-legged creatures gave the valley in the heart of Olewig its name. According to legend, wild animals were kept here during Roman times, which were later sent to fight in the amphitheater. Later, "Thier" always meant wild boar, red deer, and fallow deer - for the residents of the local stable, farmers and landowners preferred the word "cattle". Hikers don't need to worry about this subtle difference, as long as no agitated wild animal rushes onto the trail ahead. What matters more is the varied hike ahead: close to the city yet directly in the open nature.
The start and end point of the hike is the street "Im Tiergarten." After just a few meters of walking, you reach the Nell winery. Here, as well as in neighboring wineries in Olewig, you have the opportunity to take a guided tour of the estate's wine cellar followed by a wine tasting.
You pass the winery on your right. Following hiking trail T 11, you proceed along the Tiergarten stream, which you will need to cross later. On the other side of the stream, keep right and follow the path slowly uphill through some hairpin bends in the forest. Upon reaching the top, go right over a lightly trafficked road connecting the Trier district of Mariahof with Kernscheid, then downhill and later uphill again until you reach the Brubacher Hof.
Shortly after (at the height of a small chapel) keep right and hike between fields and later through the forest via trail T 11 back into the Tiergartental, the starting point of this hike.
