Three designated and marked walking routes or trails (W 1, W 2, and W 3) run through the Weisshauswald recreation area. Along the way, there is much to discover, such as the wildlife enclosure, the 3.5 km long forest educational trail, and spectacular views of the Moselle and the Roman city.
From the Porta Nigra, walk towards the Moselle. Here the path leads over the Kaiser Wilhelm Bridge to the other side of the Moselle. There you follow Bitburger Straße towards the “University” until a small path along the sandstone rock appears at the first curve. Follow this path to the Weisshauswald trail parking lot. The paths through Weisshauswald lead through probably the most popular recreational area for Trier residents. Hikers can take advantage of three designated walking routes or trails (W 1, W 2, and W 3), all starting at the parking lot of the wildlife enclosure. The routes, ranging from 4 to 9 kilometers, lead up and down through the forest. For example, follow the signs for W2 from the parking lot. The route leads through the forest, is stroller-friendly, and suitable for anyone not afraid of some elevation gains, also for jogging. The path ends again at the trail parking lot, from where you can then hike back to the city center. On trail W3, Roman remains and shady forest patches await you. Those who decide on a detour to the rock path will be rewarded again and again with breathtaking panoramic views over Trier and the Moselle between the trees.
