The Boxwood Hiking Trail connects the towns of Karden and Müden. Information boards at the starting points (in Karden at the end of the Burg-Eltz-Weg and in Müden at the Early Frankish burial ground) show the trail route.
Wild boxwood thrives on slopes and in open woodlands. Its natural distribution area is in Southern Europe, North Africa, the Caucasus, and the western Himalayas. In Germany, the shrub can be found in the Rhine and Mosel regions as well as parts of the Black Forest.
In the steep locations of the Middle and Lower Mosel, due to the mild climate, is the northernmost occurrence of wild boxwood stands in Europe. The wild boxwood covers an area of about 300 hectares between Karden and Müden. On hot days, a Mediterranean scent spreads during walks through the vineyards.
To this day, in the Mosel area, "palm branches" are made from boxwood for Palm Sunday. They are hung in house and yard as a hand bouquet and confer God's blessing.
