Unspoiled nature and magnificent views of Marienburg Castle and the wine-growing village of Briedel. A hike through the flora and fauna of the unique wine-growing landscape of the Zeller Land.
The Uhu Trail owes its name to a pair of eagle owls that once nested in the Uhu Rock. The observant hiker will discover a variety of plants and animals along the trail that have made their home in the slate cliffs, as well as birds that use the thermal currents on the steep slope for spectacular flights. The charming wooden eagle owl points the way along dreamy trails and slate cliffs.
General information
Directions
Start at the Briedel ferry—cross to the other side of the Moselle—or start at the parking lot below Marienburg—follow the left bank of the Moselle upstream—after about 1 km, Pass the former Grafenkelterhaus – continue slightly uphill along the paved path toward Marienburg – pass a seating area – at the fork in the path, keep right toward Barl-Hochgericht – at the next fork, keep right and follow the signs - The trail ends before the rocky terrain; this is where the climb begins – follow a narrow path along the rocks and up a slight incline via slate steps – until you reach a bench standing directly on the “Uhufelsen” – continue straight ahead along the narrow path - Climb over old dry stone walls and small steps - Descend along the vineyard path to the Moselle - Keep right at each fork in the trail - Take the ferry back to the starting point.

Stay Hydrated
Bring plenty of drinking water and drink regularly. Especially during hikes and bike rides along the Moselle, the heat can be intense in the summer.
Ticks
Check your body thoroughly after your trip and use a suitable insect repellent if necessary.
Oak processionary moth
Avoid contact with oak processionary moth caterpillars and their webs. The fine stinging hairs can cause skin irritation and allergic reactions.
Check the Weather
Check the current weather forecast before starting your hike or bike ride. In case of thunderstorms, heavy rain, or strong winds, you should postpone the trip or end it early.
Stay on the marked trails
Stay on the marked hiking and biking trails. This helps protect nature and yourself, and avoids unnecessary risks.
Forest Fire Risk
Pay special attention to the current risk of wildfires, especially during the summer months. Avoid open fires and smoking in the forest and in areas with dry vegetation.
Dogs
Please keep dogs on a leash whenever possible and be considerate of wildlife, grazing animals, and other visitors.

Equipment
Sturdy Footwear
Wear sturdy, non-slip footwear on hiking trails. Nature trails, slate paths, and steep vineyard trails can be slippery, especially after rain.
Headwear
Wear a hat in warm weather. There are very few shaded areas, especially on the open trails through the vineyards.
Sun protection
Apply plenty of sunscreen with an appropriate SPF and protect yourself from intense sunlight.
Tip
On summer mornings, it's not too hot yet, and Briedel glows in the bright sunlight on the opposite bank of the Moselle.
Getting there
Directions to Marienburg: From Alf, follow the B53 toward Zell-Kaimt and turn right toward Zell-Barl. Take the next right toward Marienburg.
Directions to Briedel: Take the B53 from Bernkastel-Kues or Cochem
