The Buchsbaum-Wanderpfad connects the towns of Karden and Müden. Information signs at the trailheads (in Karden at the end of the Burg-Eltz Trail and in Müden at the Early Frankish burial ground) show the route.

The wild boxwood thrives on slopes and in open forests. Its natural range extends across Southern Europe, North Africa, the Caucasus, and the western Himalayas. In Germany, the shrub is found in the Rhine and Moselle regions as well as in parts of the Black Forest.

Thanks to the mild climate, the steep slopes of the Middle and Lower Mosel are home to the northernmost population of wild boxwood in Europe. The wild boxwood covers an area of approximately 300 ha between Karden and Müden. On hot days, a Mediterranean scent wafts through the vineyards during a hike.

Even today, in the Mosel region, “palm branches” for Palm Sunday are still made from boxwood. They are hung as bouquets in homes and yards and are believed to bestow God’s blessing.
