Tip
At the midpoint of the route in the wine village of Bekond, hikers can enjoy stocking up on fruit at the Portz estate. In the town of Schweich, which serves as the start & finish point of the route, there are also numerous dining establishments.
Bekond Castle with Orangery: Privately owned. Redesigned in 1709 for the Trier cathedral provost von Kesselstatt (design by Ravensteyn). The castle garden with a large orangery from 1732 was transformed into a landscape garden in the 19th century. With a lot of energy and commitment, the orangery of Bekond Castle was restored, so it offers space for 120 people at round tables. Here you can celebrate beautiful and impressive events such as weddings, big birthdays, or corporate parties on site.
Landwehr Cross: On the Hummelsberg (407.2 meters above sea level); on the border with Mehring. A simple sandstone pillar cross from the late 19th century standing among trees. The stepped pillar base with an inscription in a pointed arch niche, the small top cross with a corpus crafted in low relief.

New: Hiking map 1 : 25,000 Schweich Holiday Region on the Roman Wine Route
ISBN: 978-3-944620-13-8.
Schweich (Mosel). With the latest MOSEL hiking map titled “Schweich Holiday Region on the Roman Wine Route,” the Eifelverein supplements its series of hiking maps along the Mosel with now the fourth map at the scale of
1 : 25,000. This hiking map series, published by the Eifelverein in cooperation with Mosellandtouristik and the tourist offices of the affected municipalities, will complete the map collection of the Eifelverein after finishing all MOSEL hiking maps with the Mosel course in the southeast.
The new hiking map replaces, with a slightly changed sheet layout, the previously issued and now outdated hiking map “Neumagen-Dhron, Schweich on the Roman Wine Route” published by the State Office for Surveying and Geobasis Information Rhineland-Palatinate. Hikers are reliably guided on the hiking tours in the Schweich Holiday Region along Moselsteig, Saar-Hunsrück-Steig, side routes, and dream loops with the new hiking map. The Meulenwald hiking area is also depicted on the map.
With Moselsteig and Saar-Hunsrück-Steig, two long-distance hiking trails awarded as "Germany’s most beautiful hiking trails" run through the Schweich Holiday Region on the Roman Wine Route. Not only with the connected circular routes named “side route” and “dream loop” does the Schweich Holiday Region form an extensive and varied hiking network. This hiking network is complemented by sections of the Eifelsteig with two partner routes, the Moselhöhenweg, as well as other main hiking trails of the Eifelverein and numerous regional hiking trails shown on the map. Selected bike tours and five mountain bike routes along the Roman Wine Route are also depicted on the map.
Despite the extensive hiking and leisure offerings shown on the map, the Moselsteig stages 5, 6, 7, and 8 as well as the five side routes “Longuicher Sauerbrunnen”, “Zitronenkrämerkreuz”, “Mehringer Schweiz”, “Klüsserather Sagenweg” and “Moselachter” form the core of this new hiking map. The four Moselsteig stages and the five side routes are not only described bilingually in the inner part of the hiking map but also show elevation profiles and give indications regarding the difficulty level of the hike.
The basis of this detailed hiking map is the official topographic map 1 : 25,000 from the State Office for Surveying and Geobasis Information Rhineland-Palatinate. The map costs a uniform 7.90 EUR and is available at the Tourist Information Roman Wine Route, Brückenstraße 46, 54338 Schweich, at Mosellandtouristik and bookshops, as well as from the Eifelverein e. V., Stürtzstraße 2 - 6 in 52349 Düren. The map can also be ordered online anytime at www.eifelverein.de . ISBN: 978-3-944620-13-8.
