The route is 10.5 km long (14.3 km with the connecting path VR 7) and categorized as easy to moderate. With breaks, you should plan for 5 hours. The profile of the Schleicher Kuckuck route allows for some variations. The best approach is to simply start walking and enjoy the charming wine culture landscape of the Roman Wine Road. The route is marked with "R 7" - via the connecting path "VW R7" you reach the Schleicher Grill hut and can theoretically also hike to the Zitronenkrämerkreuz and on the R6 hiking trail as well as on the left Moselle hillside path towards Ensch.

Tip

Roman aqueduct Pölich: Where there is no well, there must be an aqueduct, thought the ancient Romans, and they led the water needed for baths and consumption from the slopes of the Voreifel to the village. Those who want to get an impression of such an ancient aqueduct should visit the excavations and reconstructions above the church. There, the water supply belonging to a Roman estate bath facility was uncovered in the vineyards. The aqueduct is freely accessible.

View of the Detzem weir: Since the Moselle canalization, Detzem has had the second and highest (9 m) weir in Germany. Large locks, 165 m long and 12 m wide, allow the passage of freight ships and even push convoys. Interested visitors enjoy watching the massive ships being raised and lowered.

New: Hiking map 1 : 25 000 holiday region Schweich on the Roman Wine Road

ISBN: 978-3-944620-13-8.

Schweich (Moselle). With the latest MOSEL hiking map titled “ Holiday region Schweich on the Roman Wine Road “ the Eifel Association complements its series of hiking maps on the Moselle with now the fourth hiking map at scale
1 : 25 000. This series of hiking maps, issued by the Eifel Association in cooperation with Moselland Tourism and the tourist offices of the municipalities involved, will complete the Eifel Association’s map series after completion of all MOSEL hiking maps with the Moselle course in the southeast.

The new hiking map replaces the previously issued and now outdated hiking map “Neumagen-Dhron, Schweich on the Roman Wine Road” from the State Office for Surveying and Geo-information Rhineland-Palatinate with a slightly changed sheet layout. Hikers will be reliably guided on the hikes in the holiday region Schweich along the Moselsteig, Saar-Hunsrück-Steig, side trips and dream loops. The Meulenwald hiking area is also shown on the map.

Both Moselsteig and Saar-Hunsrück-Steig, awarded as "Germany's most beautiful hiking trail," run through the holiday region Schweich on the Roman Wine Road. Not only with the associated circular hikes labeled “Seitensprung” and “Traumschleife” does the holiday region Schweich form an extensive and varied hiking network. This hiking network is also complemented by sections of the Eifelsteig with two partner trails, the Moselle hillside path, and further main hiking trails of the Eifel Association as well as numerous regional hiking trails on the new map. Selected biking trails and five mountain bike routes on the Roman Wine Road are also illustrated on the map.

Despite the extensive hiking and leisure offerings shown on the map, the Moselsteig stages 5, 6, 7 and 8 and the five side trips “Longuicher Sauerbrunnen”, “Zitronenkrämerkreuz”, “Mehringer Schweiz”, “Klüsserather Sagenweg” and “Moselachter” form the core of this new hiking map. Especially the four Moselsteig stages and the five side trips are described not only bilingually in text inside the map but also with an elevation profile and indications of the difficulty level of the hike.

The basis of this detailed hiking map is the official topographic map 1 : 25 000 of the State Office for Surveying and Geo-information Rhineland-Palatinate. The map is uniformly priced at 7.90 EUR and available at the tourist information Roman Wine Road, Brückenstraße 46, 54338 Schweich, at Moselland Tourism and in bookstores as well as naturally also from the Eifel Association e.V., Stürtzstraße 2 - 6 in 52349 Düren. The map can also be ordered online around the clock at www.eifelverein.de . ISBN: 978-3-944620-13-8.
