60-kilometer circular route through various villages of the holiday region on the Moselle and Hunsrück: Bernkastel-Kues, Maring-Noviand, Mülheim, Burgen, Gornhausen.
The 60-kilometer circular route leads through the natural landscape of the Bernkastel-Kues holiday region. You cycle through vineyards and forests, historic villages and buildings. The tour starts in the twin town Bernkastel-Kues. From here, the route goes past the Fiers Chapel up to the Kues plateau. Along the ridge, the path leads past beautiful viewpoints such as the Trinity and the Grainskopf. Over the Siebenborn monastery mill and Maring-Noviand, it then goes back into the Moselle valley to Lieser. After crossing the Moselle, you reach Mülheim and explore the Moselle Hunsrück. Passing Burgen - also called "little Venice" - it goes to Gornhausen and from there towards Veldenz. Beautiful views and recommended detours, like to Veldenz castle, also await you here. Through the forest, the route returns to Bernkastel-Kues. A final stop should definitely be made at Landshut castle, from where there is a great view over the town.
General information
Directions
From Bernkastel, the route leads you over the Moselle bridge and the roundabout into the Kues district. Slightly uphill, it goes through Kues up to the Fiers Chapel, into the vineyards above Kues. Behind the Fiers Chapel, the path turns left and now leads you - steadily along the edge between vineyards and forest - around the Kues plateau. Above Lieser, the route turns away from the Moselle valley; you leave the vineyards and the route leads you from the slope edge uphill first through the forest onto the Kues plateau.
Across the extensive Kues plateau, the route leads you relatively flat to the Trinity. From the Trinity, you continue over the Grainskopf and the village of Platten, steadily through dense mixed forest, finally in a long loop downhill into the Lieser valley to the Siebenborn monastery and the village of Maring. Here, right on the Maare-Moselle cycle path, the Siebenborn monastery offers a welcome stop. On the Maare-Moselle cycle path, you continue through the Lieser valley, down to its mouth into the Moselle.
You cross the Moselle on the Mülheim bridge. Through the village of Mülheim (numerous places to stop) you continue steadily slightly uphill along the Frohnbach to the village of Burgen and further toward Hirzlei.
Just before the village of Hirzlei, you turn right into the vineyards to soon reach the forest. For several kilometers, the route now leads through dense deciduous forest, first steadily uphill and finally downhill again back into the Frohnbach valley to the Klaramühle. Here, a stop is recommended.
From the Klaramühle, the route leads you steeply uphill past the Barbelley rock through deciduous forest up to the summit of the Haardtkopf at 658m above sea level. From the highest point of the route, you continuously go downhill into the tranquil Hinterbach valley. You follow this for a while until it goes steeply uphill shortly behind the Thelenmühle toward Monzelfeld. Shortly before leaving the forest, you turn left onto a forest track towards Grimsel hut. After about 2 kilometers, you leave the forest track and follow a narrow single trail slightly uphill for about one kilometer to the Grimsel hut. At the Grimsel hut (unmanaged and just a few meters off the route), you should take a short break and enjoy the great view of the Hinterbach valley and Veldenz castle.
After crossing the busy L158, you continue over forest paths, steadily alternating uphill and downhill, over the Wilhelmshöhe, always above the Moselle. After briefly leaving the forest with a view of the village Monzelfeld, the route leads steeply downhill to Landshut castle and back to Bernkastel.
