Discover the Moselle from Trier to Koblenz on a 4-day trip. In 2021, three "Rhineland-Palatinate testers" from the Netherlands, Belgium and France were able to undertake this trip and have reported on it. You can now relive this journey yourself with the help of this route description. You will visit the following highlights:
- Trier, the oldest city in Germany
- Bernkastel-Kues
- Traben-Trarbach
- The Geierlay rope suspension bridge
- Koblenz
Experience cultural highlights such as the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Trier, enjoy the world-famous wines in the towns along the Moselle and experience breathtaking nature in the vineyards along the winding Moselle and the Geierlay in Hunsrück!
General information
Directions
Follow the course of the Moselle on the federal highways B53, B49 and B416 from Trier to Koblenz and stop at the (wine) towns along the Moselle valley as you wish. For the excursion to the Geierlay suspension bridge, follow the L202 from Treis-Karden
Safety Guidelines
The roads on the Moselle are often curvy. Watch out for the traffic and enjoy the landscape while slowing down!
Equipment
Don't forget your camera and smartphone. There are many worthwhile selfie spots along the Moselle and on the Geierlay! We also recommend hiking boots for the trip to the Geierlay!
Tip
Do not miss a visit to the historic city center of Trier at the beginning of your trip. The Porta Nigra is a recommended access point.
Getting there
Trier can be reached via the A48 and A1, at the end point Koblenz there is a connection to the A48 and A61 motorways.

- 2 hours from Cologne (via A1)
- 2 hours 30 from Frankfurt am Main (via A61, B50 (Hochmoselbrücke ), A1)
- 3 h 10 from Stuttgart (via A6/A1)
- 4 h from Basel (Switzerland) (via A5/A1)

In many villages along the route there are public parking spaces, which are signposted on site.

The journey can (with restrictions) also be made entirely by public transport, regional trains and (leisure) bus routes run along the Moselle.
