The route leads through vineyards and forests and offers, in addition to great views, the opportunity to learn something about the famous Bernkastel Doctor.

The famous Doctor vineyard: "Here an elector was healed by wine." If this statement were scientifically verifiable, the 3.25-hectare vineyard "Bernkasteler Doctor" would be priceless. For the wine from this site has the reputation of having healed Elector Boemund in the year 1360, who was ill at the time and lying sick in Landshut Castle, seemingly incurable. Since then, the wine from this site has borne this name. It is, however, certain that Privy Councillor Julius Wegeler, co-owner of the Deinhard sparkling wine cellar, purchased a parcel in 1900 for 100 gold marks per vine stock. Since then, the Doctor is considered the most expensive vineyard in Germany.

Insights into the city walk:

The path runs above the famous Doctor vineyard and past its cellars. It goes up to St. Joseph's Chapel and the vineyard hut amid the vineyards, from where you enjoy a magnificent view over Bernkastel. Afterwards, it continues into the city forest and the Kallenfels valley.

General information

Directions

From the Mosel Guest Center (Tourist Information), turn into Hebegasse and walk past the Doctor wine taverns into Graacher Straße. Continue through the Graacher Gate, the only preserved city gate of Bernkastel (where the circular route also ends later). Passing the St. Joseph's Chapel, the path leads you sometimes right, sometimes left up into the vineyards, and soon you reach a vineyard hut at a fork, located almost directly above the famous Doctor vineyard. Here, an information board (from the themed trail "Lizard loves Riesling") informs about the Doctor wine legend. Continue along vineyards towards Bergfried. Then you enter the city forest. Finally, you reach the intersection at the Kallenfelsbach. The Moselsteig, two Moselsteig side routes, the Ferienland hiking trail Maria Zill, and a mountain bike route meet here. You cross the small stream bridge and make your way back to Bernkastel on a narrow path ("Förster-Schell-Pfad"), always downhill. At the foot of Kallenfelsstraße (near the "Fairy Tale Hotel"), turn sharply right into the street "Hinterm Graben." Passing the Doctor wine cellars, which are driven into the vineyard here, the route ends at the Graacher Gate.
