The tour leads through vineyards and forests and offers great views and the opportunity to learn about the famous Bernkasteler Doctor.

The famous Doctorweinberg: "Here an electoral prince was made healthy by wine." If this statement could be scientifically proven, the 3.25 hectare vineyard "Bernkasteler Doctor" would be priceless. Because the wine from this vineyard is preceded by the reputation of having cured Elector Boemund in 1360, who at that time lay ill in Landshut Castle and apparently could not be helped. Since then the wine from this vineyard is called so.  It is certain, however, that Privy Councillor Julius Wegeler, co-owner of the Deinhard sparkling wine cellars, purchased a plot of land in 1900 at a price of 100 Goldmarks per vine. Since then, the Doctor has been considered the most expensive vineyard in Germany.
Insights into the city walk:
The path leads above the famous Doctor vineyard and past its cellars. It goes up to the St.Joseph's Chapel and the vineyard cottage in the middle of the vineyards from where you can enjoy a wonderful view over Bernkastel. Afterwards it goes on into the city forest and the Kallenfelstal.

General information

Directions

From the Moselle Guest Centre (Tourist Information) turn into Hebegasse and walk past the Doctorweinstuben into Graacher Straße. Continue through the Graacher Tor, the only remaining town gate of Bernkastel (where the circular path later ends again).  Passing the St. Josephskapelle (St. Joseph's Chapel) the path leads you up into the vineyards, sometimes right, sometimes left, and soon you will reach a vineyard cottage at a fork in the road, which is located almost directly above the famous Doctor vineyard. Here you will find a display board (from the theme trail "Lizard loves Riesling") which informs you about the Doctorweinsage. The trail continues along vineyards towards the keep. Then you dive into the city forest. Finally you reach the crossing at Kallenfelsbach. The Moselsteig, two Moselsteig side-steps, the Ferienland hiking trail Maria Zill and a mountain bike trail meet here. You cross the small brook bridge and make your way back to Bernkastel on a narrow path ("Förster-Schell-Pfad"), always downhill. At the foot of the Kallenfelsstraße (at the "Märchenhotel") turn sharp right into the street "Hinterm Graben". Passing the Doctor wine cellars, which have been driven into the vineyard here, the tour ends at the Graacher Tor.
