The circular route is especially suitable for families with children as there is much to see on a short distance.
Located on both sides of the Mosel and overlooked by the impressive Landshut Castle ruin, Bernkastel-Kues invites you to explore over 2,000 years of history. To see are beautifully decorated half-timbered houses, the early Gothic St. Michael's Church with its Baroque organ, the Renaissance town hall, and the Renaissance fountain on the marketplace.
Insights into the city walk:
For those seeking a moderate climb to Landshut Castle, the family circular route is recommended. The walk leads through Bernkastel with its romantic alleys, along the Tiefenbach to the small waterfall, past the Tinkelkapelle, and finally up to the castle. The route is longer than the other two paths leading from the historic marketplace and Spitzhäuschen up to the castle but has the advantage that it runs through the city forest from the Burgbergtunnel and shade-giving trees make the ascent easier on hot days.
Many nice places to rest and eat await along the way through the old town.
General information
Directions
Start at the Tourist Information. Go straight past the fountain, cross Karlsbader Platz, follow Moselstraße and (Old) Römerstraße. The path then leads you to the Doppelkreuz and over Burgstraße to the east portal of the Burgbergtunnel. There, cross the federal road and after a few meters enter the city forest. Those who wish can soon turn left onto a path leading down to the Tiefenbach and to the small waterfall of the creek. Otherwise, continue straight ahead to the Tinkelkapelle, where shortly before another path from the valley by the waterfall joins. At the chapel, turn sharply right onto the paved road and follow it uphill to the first hairpin bend. Here the forest path branches off to Landshut Castle. You circle and visit the castle (not signposted). At the castle driveway, follow the paved path downhill towards Mosel (Schlossweg). After a detour to the St. Anna Chapel, continue down the paved road and turn from Schlossweg into Karlstraße. It leads to Spitzhäuschen onto the medieval marketplace, where the signposting ends.
