Circular route through the Mosel-Hunsrück and the former County of Veldenz. 23.5 kilometers, passing Veldenz, Burgen, and Gornhausen.

The bike route leads through the former County of Veldenz and is therefore named after it.

From the possible starting point in Veldenz, it first goes to Burgen. Tourists affectionately call this place, valued by hikers and cyclists, because of its 19 bridges, the "Little Venice of the Middle Moselle". Through the district of Hirzlei it goes to Klaramühle. Here a water treading basin offers the perfect refreshment for your feet. Through meadow and forest landscapes it goes via Gornhausen back to Veldenz. From the path, Veldenz Castle can also be seen, the ancestral home of the Counts of Veldenz, which still recalls the great history of the former county. The partly preserved buildings suggest how impressive this largest castle complex of its kind on the Middle Moselle once was.

In general, the route leads with low technical demand through the impressive landscape of the "County of Veldenz".

General information

Directions

Right at the beginning of the route, it is worthwhile to take a look up into the Hinterbachtal from the starting point at the outskirts of Veldenz, towards Thalveldenz. Wild rock formations in the dense forest of the steep slopes frame the impressive Veldenz Castle.
The route starts through Veldenz towards Burgen. The county is a former, significant principality on the Moselle. The main residence of the counts was Veldenz Castle in the eponymous town. Besides Veldenz, which is second to none in romantic beauty among the Moselle villages, Burgen lies in a wide meadow and vineyard landscape.
You leave Veldenz on a dirt road above the district road K 89 and follow this field and meadow path below the forest to Burgen. You pass through Burgen cycling steadily along the Frohnbach and ride on a dirt road, gently ascending in the valley floor, to the district Hirzlei. Through Hirzlei, you follow the forest road steadily uphill on the right side of the stream in the direction of travel and reach Klaramühle after a few kilometers. A stop for a Radler (beer shandy) or a glass of wine and a freshly caught trout is recommended at this beautiful spot. From Klaramühle, you ride fairly steeply uphill to Gornhausen. Gornhausen is a livable village between the valleys of the Moselle and the heights of the Hunsrück. At this point, there are two options for continuing: either you follow the very lightly trafficked paved road or take a small detour via forest roads and pass the Barbelley viewpoint rock on your way up to Gornhausen.
You pass through the village of Gornhausen at the foot of the Haardtkopf during the further course of the route, then cycle steadily uphill towards the transmission mast. Here you reach the highest point of the route and also the highest elevation of the Haardtwald in the Hunsrück, the summit of the Haardtkopf (658m above sea level). Immediately behind the transmission mast, you turn east. On well-developed forest roads, you now steadily ride downhill crossing the K88, passing Heinzerather Kreuz, to Annenberg in the Hinterbachtal. You pass through Annenberg and follow, changing the side of the stream from time to time, on forest roads in the valley passing several historic mills along the Hinterbach to our starting point in Veldenz.
