Panoramic views of the Osburg High Forest, premium hiking along a section of the Saar-Hunsrück Steig, and relaxation at the Holzerather See Recreation Center—that’s what makes this trail so appealing!

The 6.5-km loop hike through the Holzerather Forest follows forest trails and runs along the stream to the recreation center at Holzerather Lake.

Spacious sunbathing areas invite you to soak up the sun or relax in the shade of the mixed forest surrounding the lake.

From the lake, a small bridge crosses the gently babbling tributary to the water-treading pool. Children can let off steam on the lawns, the zip line, and the swing, or practice their balance on the 20-meter-long, natural log. A volleyball court rounds out the amenities.

It’s a 15-minute walk from the village. A large parking lot is located right next to the recreation area. This means you could also start this loop hike from here.

General information

Directions

From the parking lot, take the upper trail along the weekend cottage community through the Osburger Hochwald. The trail meets the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig, which we now follow toward Kell am See. Once we reach the valley, we follow the stream to Holzerather See. From there, the trail climbs back up toward the town entrance and returns to the starting point.

Safety Guidelines

As a general rule, entering the forest and walking on the trails is at your own risk.

Depending on the season and weather conditions, some sections of the trails require extra surefootedness. Therefore, please wear clothing appropriate for the season and weather, as well as hiking boots with adequate tread.

Tip

With its barbecue hut, wading pool, and children's playground, the recreation center offers plenty of opportunities for a wonderful day at the lake!
