The “K5 Wind Trail—Nature and Energy” is a stroller-friendly themed loop trail in the Lieger Forest that vividly illustrates the harmony between ecological habitats and modern wind power.
This themed hiking trail, approximately 5 kilometers long, focuses on the interplay between climate protection, nature, and renewable energy. The loop trail winds through the more than 500-hectare forest in the municipality of Lieg, which not only serves as a recreational area and source of timber but also fulfills an important ecological function as a CO2 sink and oxygen producer.
This natural climate protection function harmonizes here with modern energy production: Since 2020, five Vestas V 126-3.3 MW wind turbines have been generating clean electricity at the “Lieger Wald Wind Farm.” In 2023, the trail was equipped with four informative signs that provide interesting facts about wind and solar energy. The trail impressively demonstrates how the energy transition is succeeding locally and how the phase-out of coal- and nuclear-powered electricity is being accelerated. Plans are already underway to expand the wind farm with additional turbines.
