In the footsteps of Winnetou and Old Shatterhand – via the open-air stage of the nationally renowned Karl May Festival, the route follows the Ruwer around the municipality of Pluwig.

The Karl-May-Freunde Pluwig have preserved the enthusiasm for the writer Karl May and the blood brothers Winnetou & Old Shatterhand and put the idea of the Karl May Festival into practice. The nationally known festival attracts thousands of visitors to Pluwig every two years! In 2003, an open-air stage with an impressive backdrop was created here from a derelict quarry, which has been continuously expanded and professionalized in the following years.

The hiking route runs naturally along the open-air stage once around the municipality. Please note that the path is signposted in only one direction!

General information

Directions

From the parking lot (the signposts start at the very end) the route first leads downhill towards the open-air stage of the Karl-May-Freunde Pluwig e.V. Especially on weekends in May and June, you might be lucky to witness part of a rehearsal there. We therefore ask you to be careful when approaching the facility – horse riding may take place during rehearsals. After about 700 m, the path continues above the director's house to the right and runs for a short distance parallel to the Romikaweg dream loop.

After about 1.3 km, we leave the shared route with the dream loop again and the path leads right – uphill into the village of Pluwig.

Once at the top, the path leads left – for a short way through a residential area – parallel to the other two hiking trails of the municipality. TIP: If you want to extend the route a bit, switch here to the Walburga hiking trail and combine the two paths.

Shortly before reaching the short detour to the statue of St. Walburga (WARNING: please be careful here. The rock outcrop is NOT secured by a railing!!) the path leads right uphill through a beautiful light-filled forest area to a bench with a wonderful view of the district Geizenburg.

Along the pasture fences, the path continues to rise until it reaches a crossroads. The last section still ascends – from here we walk on paved agricultural roads to the transmission mast. Upon arrival, the path turns downhill again to the right – past pasture fences the agricultural road leads back to the inhabited part of Pluwig - In der Weidenwies. Turning left over the church square, the hiker comfortably reaches the parking lot at the sports ground again.

Safety Guidelines

Basically, entering the forest and walking the trails is at your own risk. Due to the season or weather conditions, increased surefootedness is required on some sections. Please wear clothing and hiking boots appropriate to the season and weather, with suitable soles.

WARNING: The rock spur at the Walburga statue is NOT secured by a railing!
