A bike route suitable for kids. Along the Saar, you cycle flat on a separate bike path. The destination is a great adventure playground with a grill area directly on the Moselle shore in Konz.
In the far west of Rhineland-Palatinate, cycling enthusiasts find the Saar bike path amidst extensive forests, bizarre rock formations, and sun-drenched vineyards. The completely flat section along the Saar shore between Saarburg and Konz is excellently suited for a bike ride with children. The destination is a great adventure playground with a grill area right on the shore in Konz. Before that, you pass the confluence of the Saar and Moselle rivers.
On the left side of the Saar, you cycle along the Saar canal; on the right riverbank is the natural river course in the Kanzem area. Here the bike path passes the weir. Further on in Schoden, you reach a river fork, which, together with the weir, was created as part of the Saar expansion into a major shipping route.
The start and end of the route is the town of Saarburg. An impressive castle complex towers over the town. In the old town, a waterfall cascades 20 m deep. Particularly interesting for children are the bell foundry museum, the mill museum, the bird of prey park, as well as the summer toboggan and chairlift.
General information
Directions
From the boat dock, follow the bike path past the Niederleuken district towards Ayl. Continue along the river past the weir in Schoden and Kanzem, the district of Könen. Pass under the two Saar bridges. Shortly after the Saar mouth in Konz, keep left and cross the Saar via the B51 bridge. After the bridge, leave it on the left side towards the Moselle. Passing the Moselufer campsite and further past the Konz water sports club, you will reach the adventure playground.
Start the return journey past the water sports club and campsite. Pass under the bridge and you will reach the right side of the Saar. Follow the bike path past Konz-Filzen and further to Hamm. In Hamm, cycle along Pappelweg. At the end of the street, turn right into Marienstraße and immediately right again into Layweg. Back on the riverside path, continue towards Kanzem. From the wine road junction, we recommend pushing your bike over the bridge. Behind the bridge, turn right into Saarstraße. At the third intersection, keep right into the street "Im Krahnen" and thus reach the riverside bike path again. At the next intersection, keep left towards the Kanzem weir. Passing the weir, along the right side of the Saar, you reach Schoden weir and further past the districts of Schoden and Ockfen back to Saarburg. Continue here up to the bridge. On the left, there is an ascent. We recommend pushing the bike over the sidewalk as the bridge is heavily trafficked. On the bridge, turn left to reach the parking lot at the station; turn right to reach the boat dock and the center of Saarburg.
Safety Guidelines
On the way back:
At Kanzem: Push the bike comfortably from the station in Kanzem on the sidewalk over the bridge to Saarstraße. The bridge is heavily trafficked by cars.
At Saarburg:
Crossing the bridge in Saarburg - ride on the right side of the Saar up to the bridge. Here, you can comfortably push the bikes up the ramp and push them on the sidewalk to the other side of the Saar.
Equipment
Bring enough provisions as there are only a few places to stop for food along the route.
