A cycle tour suitable for kids. Cycle along the Saar on a flat, separate cycle path. The destination is a great adventure playground with a barbecue area directly on the banks of the Moselle in Konz.

In the far west of Rhineland-Palatinate, cycling enthusiasts will find the Saar Cycle Path, surrounded by extensive forests, bizarre rocky landscapes and sun-drenched vineyards. The completely flat section along the banks of the Saar between Saarburg and Konz is ideal for a cycle tour with children. The destination is a great adventure playground with a barbecue area right on the banks in Konz. Before that, you pass the confluence of the Saar and Moselle rivers.

On the left-hand side of the Saar you cycle along the Saar Canal, on the right-hand side of the river is the natural course of the river in the Kanzem area. Here the cycle path leads past the barrage. Further on in Schoden, you reach a fork in the river which, together with the barrage, was created when the Saar was developed into a major shipping route.

The tour begins and ends in the town of Saarburg. An impressive fortress towers over the town. In the old town, a waterfall plunges 20 metres into the depths. Of particular interest to children are the bell foundry museum, the mill museum, the bird of prey park and the summer toboggan run and chairlift.

General information

Directions

From the boat landing stage, follow the cycle path past the district of Niederleuken in the direction of Ayl. Continue along the course of the river past the weir in Schoden and Kanzem, the district of Könen. Cross under the two Saar bridges. Shortly after the mouth of the Saar in Konz, keep left and cross the Saar over the B51 bridge. After the bridge, leave it on the left-hand side in the direction of the Moselle. Pass the Moselufer campsite and continue past the Konz water sports club to reach the adventure playground.Start the return journey past the water sports club and campsite. Cross under the bridge and you will reach the right-hand side of the Saar. Follow the cycle path past Konz-Filzen and on to Hamm. In Hamm, cycle along the Pappelweg. At the end of the road, turn right into Marienstraße and immediately right again into Layweg. Back on the Uferweg, continue in the direction of Kanzem. From the junction with Weinstraße, we recommend that you push your bike over the bridge. After the bridge, turn right into Saarstraße. At the third junction, keep right into the street "Im Krahnen" and you will reach the riverside cycle path again. At the next junction, keep left in the direction of the Kanzem barrage.

Past the barrage, along the right-hand side of the Saar, you cross the weir in Schoden and continue past the villages of Schoden and Ockfen back to Saarburg. A stairway leads up to the left. We recommend that you push your bike over the pavement as the bridge is very busy. Turn left on the bridge to reach the car park at the railway station, turn right to reach the landing stage and the centre of Saarburg.
