Two monastery complexes, beautiful vantage points and lots of forest characterise the 13-kilometre-long "Klosterweg"-path between Machern and Siebenborn.
Nice circular path between two monasteries, with some ascents. Narrow paths as well as forest and vineyard paths alternate.
Insights into the hiking tour:
The "Klosterweg" trail can be started from both monastery complexes. A possible starting point is the Machern monastery, a former Cistercian nunnery near Zeltingen-Rachtig. At the start of the hike from the Machern monastery, the so-called "Dreifaltigkeit" (Trinity), a resting place, is passed first. Further highlights are the Siebenborn monastery and numerous beautiful views of the Lieser and Moselle valleys. We recommend a detour to the "Grainskopf" - an observation tower on the plateau of the village "Wehlen". From there you have a nice view at the Moselle valley and at the new brige B50. Hikers can stop for refreshments in both monasteries (Machern and Siebenborn).
General information
Directions
From the parking lot of the Machern monastery you cross the road B 53 and start on the common cycle- and footpath on the banks of the Moselle. Then you go under the Mosel bridge on the operating way of the lock. Immediately afterwards, turn right onto a meadow and cross the main road (L 47) again - directly at the roundabout. Then a narrow path leads you continuously through the forest up to the so-called "Dreifaltigkeit" (Trinity). It is regarded as the oldest pre-Christian place of worship on the Moselle. From the Trinity, a vineyard path leads you down into the "Liesertal" valley to the Siebenborn monastery. If the weather is favourable, you will meet hang-gliders in the valley, who start from the plateau. Above the Siebenborn monastery yard you pass a Kneipp facility, between meadows and vineyards, on a wide field path. At a large fork in the path, the "Klosterweg" turns right, towards the village "Platten", into the forest. You hike slightly uphill over soft forest soil. On the left side you pass a small "Kerbtal", whose side you change at a sharp left bend. It continues uphill. On a samll hill the "Klosterweg" turns right. The forest formation changes from deciduous to coniferous forest. Above the "Meisberg", turn right again in the direction of "Wehlen". Walk slightly downhill parallel to the Moselle. At a sharp turn to the left you have the opportunity to make a detour to the viewing tower on the "Grainskopf". Straight ahead you return to the "Dreifaltigkeit" (Trinity). From the Trinity the narrow path leads you through the forest steeply down into the Moselle valley. In front of the Zeltinger roundabout you cross the road again and return to the Machern monastery via the common cycle- and footpath.
