Downstream along the Eifel

Constant companions of the Kyll, the longest river in the Eifel, are the Kyll Cycle Path and the Cologne-Trier train line. The generally only slightly hilly route leads past numerous castles (Bertradaburg in Mürlenbach or Ramstein castle ruins near Kordel), through charming Eifel villages (Kronenburg with castle complex, Birgel with historic water mill, crime novel town Hillesheim, spa town Gerolstein), past the beer town Bitburg to the Roman city Trier.
The path crosses impressive landscapes: Kronenburg Lake, forests of the northern Eifel, Vulkaneifel, orchard meadows of the southern Eifel, rugged rock formations of the Bitburg Gutland.

Points of interest along the route

  • Kronenburg
  • Iron Museum Jünkerath
  • Historic water mill Birgel
  • Hillesheim
  • Gerolstein
  • Bertrada Castle in Mürlenbach
  • St. Thomas Monastery
  • Roman Villa Otrang

General information

Directions

Characteristics

Primarily paved, flat to slightly hilly route, exception Kyllburg-Erdorf: steeper ascent of over 110 meters in elevation (which can be bypassed by train if needed); mostly on traffic-free paths, also through villages, on little-trafficked state/county roads; connection to the Vennbahn and the Ravel L45 a (Jünkerath - Weyertz).

Connections

TIP: Connection to the Vennbahn exists via the former railway line Jünkerath (D) - Weywertz (B).

A hidden gem connection is the 22-kilometer long Kalkeifel Cycle Path. The route runs from Hillesheim to Ahrdorf and links the Kyll Cycle Path with the Ahr Cycle Path. It crosses the watershed of the Rhine and Moselle river systems and enables longer distance or circular routes in Eifel/Ahr/Rhine/Moselle. The Kalkeifel Cycle Path mostly follows the former railway line and is thus almost free of climbs, with only a short ascent just outside Hillesheim.

The Kyll Cycle Path is the most important north-south connection through the Eifel. It connects to several cycle paths: Stadtkyll (Prüm Cycle Path), Bolsdorf-Hillesheim (Kalkeifel Cycle Path), Gerolstein (Eifel-Ardennes Cycle Path), Bitburg-Erdorf (Nims Cycle Path), Trier-Ehrang (Moselle Cycle Path).

Special Cycle Route Planners on the Internet

With special cycle route planners, you have free choice in planning your individual routes.

We recommend www.radwanderland.de – the route planner of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, and www.radroutenplaner.nrw.de – the route planner of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Both planners contain all top cycle paths of the Eifel – only the handling is different, so it's simply a matter of "taste."
