A must for railway track cyclists!

A delightful pleasure is a bike tour on the Maare-Mosel Cycle Route, the former railway line that runs from the heart of the Nature Park and UNESCO Global Geopark Vulkaneifel to the vineyards of the Mosel. On the continuously asphalted path, there are hardly any inclines but plenty of opportunities to rest and sights: two viaducts, numerous bridges, four tunnels, as well as Eifel maars and extinct volcanoes. Cycling loops lead to places such as the Strohner lava bomb or the Manderscheid castles.
Perfect for leisure cyclists, families with children, and inline skaters – and in both directions.

Points of interest along the way

  • Daun Castle
  • Eifel Volcano Museum Daun
  • Schalkenmehren Maar
  • Lava Bomb & Volcano House Strohn
  • Manderscheid Castles & Maar Museum Manderscheid
  • Wittlich (former synagogue, historic marketplace, old town hall, and Roman villa, among others)
  • Bernkastel-Kues (wine cultural center, birthplace of Cusanus, marketplace)

General information

Directions

The bike path is the easiest connection from the Vulkaneifel to the Mosel because it runs entirely on the former railway line from Daun to Lieser. It is the ideal and comfortable route to get to know the Vulkaneifel, varied over viaducts, bridges, and through tunnels. For return transport from the Mosel back to the heights, the RadBus MaareMosel is available!

Characteristics

Flat, continuously asphalted route on a former railway track (Daun-Lieser) with average inclines of 2.5 percent; rarely on low-traffic roads, therefore very suitable for families with children/inline skaters.

Connections

Daun: Eifel-Ardennes Cycle Route, Kosmos Cycle Route, Mineral Springs Route

Bernkastel-Kues: Mosel Cycle Route

On the Daun - Manderscheid route: eight cycling experience loops around Daun and Manderscheid (lengths: 3 - 16 km)
