The local poet Maria Croon is the namesake of the valley hike along the Leuk, including the loop to her birthplace Meurich.

Maria Croon was born on May 13, 1891, as Maria Brittnacher in the small village of Meurich in the Saar region. The down-to-earth local poet mainly dedicated her poems and writings to real people from her immediate surroundings, thus presenting a detailed picture of the conditions between the Mosel, Leuk, and Saar at that time. As a trained teacher, she taught at various village schools, eventually married her colleague Nikolaus Croon, and settled together with him in Britten near Losheim. She died there in March 1983. She is buried in her home village of Meurich.

General information

Directions

The Maria-Croon-Weg is identical to the long-distance hiking trail G1 from Saarburg to Orscholz, which is already in Saarland. The route consistently follows the valley of the Leuk. For this reason, starting at the mouth of the Leuk is practically mandatory. Through narrow steep alleys, it goes up the Laurentiusberg to the waterfall, past the parish church to the Kunoturm and through the Friedensaue out of the town. At the parking lot of the shopping center "Rewe/Takko/DM/ALDI," you finally leave Saarburg behind and hike past the Leukbachtal campsite always on the left valley side upstream to Perdenbach and Trassem. You go through the entire village on Kirchstraße and proceed on Saarburger Straße always on the same side of the valley. The trail now shows more noticeable ups and downs. Shortly after Trassem, turn left off the main road, then cross it to the right. From Trassem to the Lower Stegmühle, the Saar circular trail runs parallel to the Maria-Croon-Weg. Kollesleuken is passed, along with the Herrenmühle and finally the Lower Stegmühle, where the other two routes separate. The Maria-Croon-Weg remains in the valley floor and crosses the Leuk, which here flows from an idyllic forest pond into its streambed with a small waterfall below an iron footbridge. After the Upper Stegmühle, it is not far to Orscholz. No one will likely miss the chance to continue hiking from the end of the trail to the Cloef viewpoint above the Saar Loop. Deep below, the Saar flows through what is probably Germany's most famous river loop, which you simply must see.

Please note that this hiking trail is not a certified premium hiking trail and there is no continuous signage along the route. Furthermore, the trail partly runs on paved service roads and not on narrow paths.

Equipment

Consistently comfortable forest and field paths; light hiking shoes are sufficient. Bring a backpack with provisions.

Tip

Halfway between Trassem and Kollesleuken, a 6.5-kilometer additional loop of the Maria-Croon-Weg branches off to Meurich and Kirf, reconnects with the main route in Kollesleuken, and requires an additional approximately 1.5 hours of walking.
