Circular hike from Nittel along the Mosel via Rehlingen back through the Elbling vineyards to Nittel.
We first go through the underpass at the Nittel train station and hike leisurely along the Mosel riverbank to the district of Rehlingen, where we again pass under the railway line at the confluence of the Rehlinger Bach into the Mosel and, via a somewhat steep ascent, reach the development. Through the Elbling vineyards below the "Kölliger Fels", with a constant view of the Luxembourg vineyard landscape and the village with its rock massif in the background, we return to Nittel.
General information
Directions
The Mosel-Elblingweg, which, as the name suggests, runs along the Mosel in the first half and between Elbling and Burgundy vineyards in the second half, starts at the train station in Nittel. From here, you go through the railway underpass to the Mosel riverbank. There you already get an impression of the further course of the path, which runs closely along the Mosel in the first part.
At the height of the Nittel sewage treatment plant, the hiker once again comes across stone monuments of the sculpture path "Stones on the River" at a small rest area. Here you find the sculptures "Signs" and "Waymark" by Willi Bauer and Martine Andernach, respectively. The further course of the path upstream offers numerous enchanting photo opportunities along the Mosel riverbank. In sunshine, the sun rays always reflect anew and differently in the river.
After about 3 km, on the other side of the Mosel lies the Luxembourg wine village Ahn, which offers some excellent winemakers.
Shortly afterwards, the N5 leaves the river and turns left at a right angle at the confluence of the Rehlinger Bach into the Mosel. First, it goes through a rather low underpass beneath the railway line and then slowly uphill towards the Nittel district of Rehlingen.
After passing through a small hollow, which even has a small bridge on the right side of the path to cope with floods of the Rehlinger Bach, the path continues uphill to Rehlingen. After crossing the federal road B 419, a short stretch follows through the village.
At the intersection of the streets Am Haarberg and Am Kapellenberg, the N5 continues to the left, passes the Weber-Temmes winery, and then moderately climbs into the vineyards. After a short ascent, it turns left onto an asphalted farm road that leads back through vineyards to Nittel.
Tip: Detour to the St. Martin cemetery chapel. At the mentioned intersection, feel free to continue a few steps to the right and then take the steep paved path behind the Scheuer winery to the Rehlingen St. Martin cemetery chapel on the left.
As a reward for the steep ascent, there is an inviting sensory bench at the top, from which you have a beautiful view over Rehlingen and the Mosel. Behind the bench, the path turns left at the next crossroads and after a short time reaches the signposted N5 route again.
About halfway back, to the right is a reed-covered water basin with a distinctive rubble stone column. A little further towards Nittel, also on the right side, a bench next to an old wine press invites you once again to enjoy the view. It now slowly goes downhill towards the cemetery, where the path turns left. It follows the street Am Wiesengraben until it turns right at Am Pflanzgarten and continues straight ahead to the starting point. Overall, it is a rather easy hike on consistently paved paths. It is especially recommended because of the beautiful river impressions and the wonderful views over the Mosel valley on the return.
The hike is continuously marked with the "N5" sign.
Tip
In Rehlingen: Detour to the St. Martin cemetery chapel.
