This bike route along the Mosel, enriched with numerous views of the impressive Mosel cultural landscape, mostly leads over wide vineyard and forest paths.

Insights into the bike route:

Bernkastel-Kues, the center of the Middle Mosel, is the starting point of this route. Alt-Kues (where finds from Celtic times were discovered) is about 15 minutes on foot from the old town. Many vintners (and wine taverns) have their home here...
The Fiers Chapel lies in the middle of the Kues vineyards, the view of the town is spectacular. The Kues plateau is the "oasis of tranquility" of the town. The spa with a healing climate is home to four rehabilitation clinics and is ideal for hiking, cycling, and catching a breath. From the Trinity to Machern Monastery (a former Cistercian nunnery) is just a stone's throw. Various museums (icons, toys, dolls), a brewery, and hospitable restaurants invite you for a small (or larger) visit. Zeltingen-Rachtig is a famous wine village whose operetta festival (every 2 years) attracts numerous guests from home and abroad. The Graach sheep farm, almost at the end of the route, offers magnificent views again before rolling back to Bernkastel.

General information

Directions

From Bernkastel, the route takes you over the Mosel bridge and the roundabout into the Kues district. Slightly uphill, you ride through Kues and Alt-Kues along Weingartenstraße with its many vintner's farms and wine taverns up to the edge of the town. From here, the path leads, after a hairpin turn, steadily uphill through the Kues vineyards up to the Fiers Chapel. Behind the Fiers Chapel, turn left and now ride steadily along the edge between vineyards and forest with constantly excellent views around the Kues plateau. Above Lieser, the route turns away from the Mosel valley and now follows, still along the edge of the Kues plateau, the old original valley of the Mosel.

Finally, you leave the vineyards and turn right into the forest towards the Trinity. From the Trinity, continue over the Grainskopf, slightly downhill through the Wehlen forest, until after crossing the B50 you reach open terrain again.

Over the site of the planned Zeltingen holiday village, you continue uphill until you gain a free view of the Mosel again at the top. You now continue, again along the edge between vineyard and forest edge, above Machern Monastery with excellent views of the Mosel valley towards Ürzig. Soon on the left, the launch site of the paragliders on the slope can be seen.

At the height of the Hochmosel crossing, you change direction and ride downhill now upstream along the Mosel down to Machern Monastery. The brewery at Machern Monastery invites you to rest or also to visit the museum.

Then you cross the Mosel again and reach Zeltingen. Through the Zeltingen vineyards, you ride steadily uphill again to the Hunsrück-side abutment of the Hochmosel crossing. Along the upper edge of the Zeltingen plateau, the route again leads with constantly great views of the Mosel further upstream. After a short detour on the plateau, past the Zeltingen barbecue huts, you continue along the edge between vineyards and forest towards Bernkastel. In the valley, the dam and the towns of Wehlen and Graach can be seen.

Shortly before the Graach sheep farm, you leave the Mosel valley and ride onto the plateau. In a short loop over the plateau, you can enjoy the excellent view of the Eifel and the Hunsrück. You continue to the viewpoint “Maria Zill”. From here you have another great view of the Mosel valley and Bernkastel-Kues. Now you ride back down to Bernkastel - quite steeply at the end - on a single trail.
