A round trip through the former county of Veldenz. It starts in the municipality of Veldenz, continues via castles, Gornhausen and the Belginum archaeological park - one of the highlights of the tour.

Insights into the cycle tour:

The tour starts in the municipality of Veldenz in the "most beautiful side valley of the Moselle". Veldenz Castle, the ancestral home of the Counts of Veldenz - dominating the region from a rugged mountain ridge - still reminds us of the great history of the County of Veldenz. The next stop is the town of Burgen, often referred to as "Little Venice of the Middle Moselle" because of its 19 bridges. Via Gornhausen and Gonzerath we will reach the highlight of the tour - the Belginum Archaeological Park. It gives a very vivid insight into life on a trunk road in Celtic and Roman times. Via Kommen, Longkamp and Monzelfeld the route leads into the Hinterbachtal valley and from here via Thalveldenz back to the starting point in Veldenz.

General information

Directions

The tour starts at the end of Veldenz. The view goes up into the Hinterbachtal. Wild rock formations in the dense forest of the steep slopes frame the imposing Veldenz Castle. The only partially preserved buildings give an idea of how imposing this castle complex once was. You leave the Hinterbachtal and Schloss Veldenz behind and drive through Veldenz. On the district road K89 you leave the town in the direction of the castles, which you reach after only a few kilometres.Castles, which are in no way inferior to Veldenz in terms of romantic beauty, are the next to be reached. You leave the wine village in southern direction on a small but well paved road. On steeply rising serpentines you fight your way up the wooded slopes and finally reach the plateau. Here a magnificent view is guaranteed. With good visibility, your view reaches far into the Eifel. The main ridge of the Hunsrück is still covered by the Haardtkopf, which you now have to conquer. On good paths, the trail leads you slightly uphill to Gornhausen, at the foot of the Haardtkopf. You pass through Gornhausen and continue south - now on a well-surfaced forest path - climbing steadily in the dense forest to reach the crest of the Haardtkopf. Once you have arrived, you will have a magnificent view over the Hunsrück.You roll further down towards Merscheid, pass Elzerath and reach Gonzerath. Through Gonzerath the tour leads you - with changing views - to the Archaeology Park Belginum. You can plan a good 1-2 hours for a visit to the museum with its outdoor areas. From Belginum, take the little used K185 down to Wederath and further to Kommen or Longkamp. Just before Longkamp, you will pass the B50 and continue through meadows and fields on well-developed farm tracks to Monzelfeld. From Monzelfeld the tour leads you on a well developed, but not asphalted forest path, down into the Hinterbachtal. Along the Hinterbach stream you now cycle steadily downhill to Thalveldenz. This section can be a bit muddy in the cold season and after long periods of rain. From Thalveldenz the tour continues on a well asphalted road to the finish in Veldenz.

Safety Guidelines

Please note that the tour is not signposted. The tour partly follows forest paths (Hinterbachtal, Haardtwald), which can be muddy, especially after long periods of rain.

Equipment

The tour should be easy to manage with an eBike (full battery) despite the considerable ascent from the Moselle valley up. For sporty cyclists a trekking bike or a MTB bike is a good choice.
