Circular route from the Moselle into the Hunsrück. Just under 30 km, almost exclusively on traffic-free cycle, forestry, and field paths.
This circular route starts at the Moselle. Cyclists can start in Bernkastel-Kues, Graacher Schäferei, Mülheim, or Veldenz.
Insights into the bike route:
From Bernkastel, the route leads - past famous vineyards such as the "Bernkasteler Doctor" - away from the Moselle, through Graacher Schäferei, into the deep forests of the Hunsrück, including first-class Moselle panoramas. In the Hunsrück, the towns Longkamp and Monzelfeld are stages on the route. From Longkamp, the progress of the bridge construction project "Hochmoselübergang" can be observed very well. Veldenz lies in one of the most beautiful side valleys of the entire Moselle and is - after the smaller town of Thalveldenz - the next destination of the route. Mülheim on the Moselle, home of the famous Zeppelin wine, follows. Downstream along the Moselle, shortly before Bernkastel-Kues, the "golden" Andel awaits cyclists. In earlier times, one or another gold piece was found here. This is still commemorated today, among other things, by the gold miner’s fountain in the middle of the town.
General information
Directions
The starting point is the Gestade in Bernkastel. If you choose Bernkastel-Kues as your starting location, the route immediately leads steadily uphill from the Moselle valley up onto the Moselle spur between Bernkastel and Trarbach. The incline is considerable and long-lasting. During the ascent through the vineyards, you can enjoy magnificent views of the Moselle valley and Bernkastel-Kues. Then you leave the vineyards heading towards Graacher Schäferei.
Through Graacher Schäferei, with a short pushing section at the town's exit, you continue on a well-developed road up onto the plateau. The route steadily climbs along the path of the B50n to Longkamp. Through meadows and fields and on well-maintained farm paths, you pedal to Monzelfeld. From there, the route leads you down on well-maintained but unpaved forest paths into the Hinterbachtal and through it to Thalveldenz. This section can be somewhat muddy during the cold season and after prolonged rain periods. From Thalveldenz, the route continues again on well-asphalted farm roads to Mülheim, from where you cycle back to Bernkastel on the Moselle cycle path.
Safety Guidelines
Please note that the route is not signposted. In Graacher Schäferei, there is a short section of about 30 meters where the bike should be pushed due to the steepness and narrowness of the path. In the Hinterbachtal, the unpaved sections can be somewhat muddy during the cold season and after longer rainy periods.
Equipment
The route should be manageable with an eBike (fully charged battery) despite the considerable climb from the Moselle valley. For sporty cyclists, a trekking bike or mountain bike is recommended.
Tip
There are dining options in all the towns along the route. Particularly worth seeing are Veldenz Castle and the Villa Romana in Veldenz.
