50-kilometer bike route from Bernkastel via Graacher Schäferei into the Hunsrück. Via the Archaeology Park Belginum, Gonzerath, and the Haardtkopf back to the Moselle.
The circular route can optionally be started from Bernkastel-Kues, Graacher Schäferei, Mülheim, or Veldenz. Bernkastel-Kues, one of the possible starting points of the bike tour, is considered the center of the Middle Moselle. The historic old town with its numerous half-timbered houses is particularly worth seeing.
Insights into the bike tour:
From Bernkastel, the tour leads via the Graacher Schäferei into the forests of the Hunsrück. A special highlight is the Archaeology Park Belginum – a stopover is worthwhile here. Afterwards, the route continues through picturesque Hunsrück villages to the stages Longkamp and Monzelfeld as well as further to Veldenz. Here, in one of the most beautiful side valleys of the Moselle, the former County of Veldenz, which consisted of several towns on the Moselle and Hunsrück, had its headquarters. Following are Mülheim, home of the famous Zeppelin wine, and downstream towards the Moselle – shortly before Bernkastel-Kues – the "golden" Andel, whose gold prospector’s fountain recalls times past.
General information
Directions
If you choose Bernkastel-Kues as the starting point, the route leads you steadily uphill out of the Moselle valley, up onto the Moselle spur between Bernkastel and Trarbach. The incline is significant and prolonged. During the ascent through the vineyards, you can enjoy great views of the Moselle valley and Bernkastel-Kues. You leave the vineyards heading towards Graacher Schäferei.
Through the Graacher Schäferei, with a short push section at the town exit, you continue on a well-developed road up to the plateau. Along the route of the B50n, the route steadily climbs to Longkamp. Through the small village of Kommen, you cycle further on lightly trafficked roads to the Archaeology Park Belginum. A longer break is worthwhile here. The tour continues via the old Roman road through Gonzerath and through meadows and forests to Elzerath, from where you climb the highest point of the tour, the Haardtkopf. On well-developed forest paths, you steadily ride uphill to the ridge.
A magnificent panoramic view of the Eifel greets you after leaving the forest above Gornhausen. On well-developed field paths, it now goes continuously downhill to Burgen and onwards to Veldenz. From Veldenz, the path leads you through fairly flat vineyards to Mülheim. From there, you cycle back to Bernkastel on the Moselle cycle path.
Safety Guidelines
Please note that the route is not signposted. In the Graacher Schäferei, there is a short section of about 30 meters where the bike should be pushed due to steepness and narrow path.
Equipment
The route should be manageable with an eBike (fully charged), despite the significant incline out of the Moselle valley. For sporty cyclists, a trekking bike or mountain bike is recommended.
Tip
There are dining options in all towns along the route. Particularly worth seeing is the romantic old town of Bernkastel.
