Pure cycling fun for those who want to climb to the top of the steep slopes of the Moselle vineyards and gently cycle along the banks of the Moselle - a combination of high-altitude cycling route and Moselle cycle path (main or secondary route).

A cycling tour for e-bikers or sporty touring cyclists - with the opportunity to discover the landscape from different angles - from a bird's eye view in the steep slopes and a frog's eye view from the banks of the Moselle!

Insights into the tour:

The bike tour starts at the Graacher Tor in the old town of Bernkastel and leads steeply up into the vineyards. It offers breathtaking panoramas with great views of Bernkastel-Kues, the Moselle and the vineyards. Along the way, themed trails such as "Lizard Loves Riesling" or the Zeltingen "Variety Garden" provide information about the flora and fauna of the Moselle region.  It passes twice under one of the highest road bridges in Europe. At a height of around 160 metres, the structure spans the Moselle valley for 1.7 kilometres. On the way back, you cycle along the banks of the Moselle, passing pretty wine villages and sights such as a Roman wine press, a former Cistercian monastery, a suspension bridge and a Moselle barrage.

General information

Directions

The tour starts in the old town of Bernkastel at the only preserved town gate, the Graacher Tor.  Past the St. Josef Chapel and individual stations of the "Lizard Loves Riesling" theme trail, the route leads through the "Badstube" vineyard up to the small skywalk on the uppermost Wingertsweg. We continue on it, then up the steep section to the Bernkastel Jewish cemetery and on to the Graach district of "Schäferei". Once there, we follow the panorama road on the left and then the signs to the "Auf'm Hahn" hikers' car park for a short distance.  Then, however, we turn off again onto a vineyard path, which again opens up the highest vineyards. We cycle through the vineyard "Graacher Himmelreich" in the direction of Zeltingen-Rachtig and enjoy a particularly scenic section. Above Zeltingen-Rachtig we reach the "Sortengarten", where many Mediterranean and exotic bushes and trees have been planted alongside native shrubs and useful trees on a former vineyard area of approx. 4000 m².  The tour continues through Zeltingen-Rachtiger and Erden vineyards, under the "Hochmoselbrücke" bridge and at medium slope height on the "Panorama-Radelstrecke" to the road feeder of the "Hochmoselbrücke" bridge.  Follow the feeder road towards the Moselle and cross the Moselle bridge at the roundabout between the wine villages of Erden and Lösnich.  On the other side of the Moselle, we start our return journey on the cycle path that runs parallel to the B 53 in the direction of Ürzig. We pass the Roman wine press in Erden and the Ürzig rock world. At the entrance to Ürzig, the "Mönchshof" vineyard is still known to older people as the filming location for the TV series "Moselbrück", which was broadcast in the 70s.  After Ürzig, the route passes under the "Hochmoselbrücke" bridge again and continues to Machern Monastery. The former Cistercian monastery houses a toy and icon museum as well as various restaurants.  Machern Monastery is also known as the venue for the "Moselle Festival Weeks". At the Moselle bridge in Zeltingen-Rachtig, you can decide which side of the river to cycle back to Bernkastel-Kues. You can either cycle over the Moselle bridge to Zeltingen-Rachtig and return along the main route of the "Moselle Cycle Path", or choose the secondary route via Bernkastel-Wehlen, past the visitor platform of the Moselle barrage.
