A varied cycling tour through the Moselle's sea of vines - with nature and cultural experiences on the steep slopes of the Moselle valley and along the waters of the Moselle and Lieser.
A challenging cycling tour for e-bikers or sporty touring cyclists through the Moselle wine cultural landscape.
Insights into the tour:
The cycle tour leads up into steep vineyards and along flat riverside paths (on sections of the secondary route of the "Moselradweg" and on a section of the "Maare-Mosel-Radweg"). It can be started from different starting points and can also be shortened. Along the way there are magnificent views to marvel at and numerous sights to discover, e.g. the old town of Bernkastel, the Cusanus birthplace or the Cusanusstift with wine museum and vinotheque in the Kues district, the former monasteries of Siebenborn and Machern, the Paulskirche church in Lieser or the Roman wine press in Erden. Side trips to the pretty wine villages of the holiday and wine country are always possible.
General information
Directions
We start the tour at the Siebenborn Monastery in Maring-Noviand. There is a parking area at the sports field. First we cross the bridge over the Lieserbach and the "Maare-Mosel-Radweg" and cycle past the former Siebenborn monastery on the right. At the next right-hand bend, turn left into the meadows and vineyards and follow the farm track steadily uphill. The first intermediate destination, St Paul's Church in the midst of the vineyards, can be seen from afar. Until the 16th century, it was the religious centre of fourteen villages and a much-visited pilgrimage destination. At its feet is a primeval valley of the Moselle (i.e. the Moselle flowed along there ages ago before modelling another river bed further south). From the Paulskirche we let the bikes roll down to the outskirts of Lieser and then cycle straight back up through the vineyards towards Bernkastel-Kues. If you like, you can make a short detour to the "Heldensicht", the "Most Beautiful Wine View 2020". But even so, the section of the route up to the district of Kues offers magnificent views of the Moselle's "sea of vines". In the old core of the Kues district, there are romantic alleys with old winegrowers' houses in natural slate construction, towards the Moselle the houses become more stately. We cross the Moselle bridge to the much-visited old town of Bernkastel. The medieval market square and the old town with its numerous half-timbered buildings are a magnet for visitors. From the Graacher Tor, the only preserved town gate, the route climbs steeply up into the vineyards. Past the St. Josef Chapel and individual stations of the "Lizard Loves Riesling" theme trail, the route leads through the "Badstube" vineyard up to the small skywalk on the uppermost Wingertsweg. We continue on it, then up the steep section to the Bernkastel Jewish cemetery and on to the Graach district of "Schäferei". Once there, we follow the "Panoramastraße" on the left and for a short distance the signs to the "Auf'm Hahn" hikers' car park. Then, however, we turn off again onto a vineyard path that leads to the highest vineyards. We cycle through the "Graacher Himmelreich" vineyard in the direction of Zeltingen-Rachtig and enjoy a particularly scenic section. Above the double municipality of Zeltingen-Rachtig, we can take a break in the "Sortengarten" (variety garden), where many native shrubs and useful trees as well as Mediterranean and exotic bushes and trees are planted on a former vineyard area. The tour continues through Zeltingen-Rachtiger and Erden vineyards, under the "Hochmoselbrücke" bridge, at medium slope height on the "Panorama-Radelstrecke" to the road feeder of the "Hochmoselbrücke" bridge. Follow the feeder road towards the Moselle and cross the Moselle bridge at the roundabout between the wine villages of Erden and Lösnich. On the other side of the Moselle, we cycle along the cycle path that runs parallel to the B 53 towards Ürzig. We pass the Roman wine press in Erden and the Ürzig rock world. At the entrance to Ürzig, the "Mönchshof" vineyard is still known to older people as the filming location for the TV series "Moselbrück", which was broadcast in the 70s. After Ürzig, the route passes under the "Hochmoselbrücke" bridge again and continues to Machern Monastery. The former Cistercian monastery houses a toy and icon museum as well as various catering establishments. From the Moselle bridge at Zeltingen-Rachtig, the route continues to the barrage and then to the Bernkastel district of Wehlen with the only suspension bridge spanning the Moselle. From Wehlen we cycle along the banks of the Moselle to Kues. In Kues, visits to the Cusanusstift with its wine museum and vinotheque, the Oldtimer Museum or the Cusanus Birthplace are worthwhile. We cycle upstream along the banks of the Moselle to the Kues harbour and campsite. There we cycle across a meadow area and along the riverside path to the wine village of Lieser. We stay on the cycle path between the flood embankment and the banks of the Moselle and take a look at the imposing Lieser Castle, where a luxury hotel now resides. Shortly before the Lieser stream flows into the Moselle, the "Maare-Moselle cycle path" branches off (under a road bridge with parking facilities). This cycle path on a former railway line leads us back in the Lieser valley to the starting point at Siebenborn Monastery in Maring-Noviand.
