A circular route through the former County of Veldenz. The start is in the municipality of Veldenz, then it goes via Burgen, Gornhausen, and the Archaeology Park Belginum – one of the highlights of the route.
Varied and scenic circular route through large parts of the former County of Veldenz.
Insights into the bike tour:
The route starts in the municipality of Veldenz in the "most beautiful side valley of the Moselle." Veldenz Castle, ancestral home of the Counts of Veldenz – dominated by a rugged mountain ridge – still commands the region and recalls the great history of the County of Veldenz. The next stage is the town of Burgen, which is often called the “Little Venice of the Middle Moselle” due to its total of 19 bridges. Via Gornhausen and Gonzerath, the route leads to the highlight of the tour – the Archaeology Park Belginum. It vividly conveys insights into life on a long-distance road in Celtic and Roman times. Via Kommen, Longkamp, and Monzelfeld, the route leads into the Hinterbachtal and from there via Thalveldenz back to the starting point in Veldenz.
General information
Directions
The route starts at the outskirts of Veldenz. The view goes up into the Hinterbachtal. Wild rock formations in the dense forest of the steep slopes frame the imposing Veldenz Castle. The partially preserved buildings give an impression of how impressive this castle complex once was. You leave the Hinterbachtal and Veldenz Castle behind and ride through Veldenz. On district road K89, you leave the town heading towards Burgen, which you reach after just a few kilometers.
Burgen, which is just as romantically beautiful as Veldenz, is reached next. You leave the wine town heading south on a small but well-paved road. On steep ascending switchbacks, you fight your way up the forest slopes and finally reach the high plateau. Here a magnificent view is guaranteed. On a clear day, your view extends far into the Eifel. The main ridge of the Hunsrück is still concealed by the Haardtkopf in the foreground, which now has to be conquered.
On good paths, the route leads you with a slight ascent to Gornhausen, at the foot of the Haardtkopf. You pass through Gornhausen to continue south – now on a well-maintained forest path – steadily ascending through dense forest to reach the summit ridge of the Haardtkopf. Once arrived, you are offered a magnificent view over the Hunsrück.
You then roll further down towards Merscheid, pass Elzerath, and reach Gonzerath. The route leads you through Gonzerath – with changing views – to the Archaeology Park Belginum. You can plan 1-2 hours for a visit to the museum with its outdoor areas. From Belginum, you initially ride down the lightly trafficked K185 to Wederath and then on to Kommen and Longkamp. Just before Longkamp, you cross the B50 and continue through meadows and fields on well-developed farm roads to Monzelfeld.
From Monzelfeld, the route leads you down into the Hinterbachtal on a well-developed but unpaved forest path. Along the Hinterbach, you now cycle steadily downhill to Thalveldenz. This section can be somewhat muddy in the cold season and after long periods of rain. From Thalveldenz, the route continues on a well-paved road back to the destination in Veldenz.
Safety Guidelines
Please note that the route is not signposted. Part of the route runs over forest paths (Hinterbachtal, Haardtwald) which can be muddy especially after long periods of rain.
Equipment
The route should be manageable with an eBike (fully charged) despite the significant ascent from the Moselle valley. For sporty cyclists, a trekking bike or an MTB is recommended.
